What Septic Looks
Like Out Here
Tonopah is unincorporated desert west of Buckeye along the I-10, and there is no municipal wastewater system to tie into. Every property runs its own septic system and its own well, which makes the tank as much a part of the house as the roof.
Two things follow from that, and they are why a Tonopah job is not the same as a job in a Buckeye subdivision:
- Depth to lids. Builders and installers sometimes set a tank deeper than normal because of the plumbing in the house and the fall the pipe needs to reach it. How deep the tank sits drives the cost of digging, which is one more reason risers matter.
- Records are thin. Older systems out here predate tidy paperwork, so the tank size and layout are often a genuine unknown. Maricopa County holds whatever exists, and that is where we start rather than guessing on site.
The one thing that is exactly the same as anywhere else in the county: if you sell, Arizona still requires an ADEQ inspection, with the Report of Inspection emailed to everyone in the deal. Being unincorporated changes nothing about that.
