How Often Should
You Pump?
Most household septic tanks need pumping every three to five years. The exact interval depends on how many people live there, how big the tank is, how much water you use and how much solid waste goes into it — that is the EPA’s guidance, not a rule of thumb.
As a rough illustration, a larger household on a smaller tank sits at the shorter end and a couple on a larger tank at the longer end. A garbage disposal shortens it noticeably, since it adds solids the tank has to hold.
